Momart has pioneered research and development into the detrimental effects of artwork in transit and designed the fabrication of vehicles, equipment and storage facilities to counter these effects. At the Art in Transit convention in 1991 it was accepted that Momart, in consultation with the Tate Gallery, had developed the “gold standard” in Museum specification cases.

Packing and casemaking

There are two fundamental principles that we observe in order to pack artwork to a good standard:

  • Object assessment – We treat all objects individually and look for the weaknesses and strengths associated with that object. Our assessment also takes into account the level of exposure that may occur when the packing system is designed.
  • Potential Points of failure – We identify weaknesses within an object and eliminate wherever possible. We use the packing system to introduce a controlled point of failure to absorb shock before it reaches the contained object.

The wrapping of an object is carried out with appropriate conservation grade materials in conjunction with an assessment of its particular properties. Generally an object would be sealed to protect it against changes in the environment and protect the surface from abrasion.

Packing techniques are adopted to maintain as stable an environment as possible for the object, reduce its vulnerability and minimise the levels of risk it is exposed to.

Momart produce a range of bespoke commercial, semi- museum and museum standard casing. Designed to solve in advance any handling issues. Packing is in conservation grade material and all casing is stamped in accordance with directive ISPN 15
